Until very recently, when they went out of business, I worked as the lead developer for a company called WebMattsters and had my own clientele as well. Currently I am partnered with the wonderful team over at Hammerhead Graphics and we are rocking the web world one website at at time!!! I am proficient in HTML/XHTML, CSS, jQuery, Javascript, PHP and most CMS's. The thing I am most proud of, professionally, is my ability to learn new techniques and technologies quickly and efficiently. I come with high recommendations from not only my partners but my clients as well. Be sure to check out my online portfolio to see the scope of my development abilities.
In 2002 my first child was born and I knew right away that getting a conventional job again was OUT of the question. So I went to work brainstorming on ways to earn money from home. I had gone to college for CAD (computer aided drafting), and had gotten certified. However, I knew that my passion wasn't for CAD. So I tried a whole lot of "work from home jobs". A few were legit and would have worked out well if I didn't have a little one to tend to...answering phones can be a chore when you are a busy Mom, and you can't control when the baby is hungry or needs changing. So needless to say, those jobs didn't last too long.
One day in August of 2002 my brother came to my house to show me some neat coding that he had learned, and I watched him enter in a bunch of "gobbeldy-gook" and the next thing I know, it's a cool looking "Matrix" effect! I thought, wow, that was awesome. So after he left, I sat down at the computer and looked up some online tutorials and before I knew it, I was hand coding basic HTML. I got my first client www.heartlandsale.com and I took a "pre-made" template that they chose and did all kinds of weird stuff to it...while now I think it is HORRIBLE, then both the client and I LOVED it! (They still love it by the way). And thus my career was born.
I started my own web design business "SmartDesigns" in October of 2002, and contracted with a few of my peers and family members to help me out should I need them. Some helped with the design, some helped with coding etc. But it was a really slow start...my next client didn't come until almost a year later. www.thefrenchconnectionkennel.com so I took on the site, and again the client and I were 100% satisfied. It wasn't until after my final client under "SmartDesigns" that I learned that running a business was truly hard work.
A friend/client, suggested to me, "Why not Freelance?"...Rather than owning a business which was costly and not bringing in enough revenue to cover the overhead, I could freelance!!!...And that's it...I have been freelancing since 2004, when my daughter was born, and I love it! I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to do what I love and succeed at it!
